In a small sauce pan, heat 1/2 cup sugar over medium low heat until melted and turning brown - about 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

The cake batter recipe here seems like it's a little off. The caramel and pears were great but the cake was almost like a sticky pudding, with perhaps a bit too much soda in relation to flour and liquid (almost to the point of being able to taste the soda). It bubbled a lot while cooking and ended up very wet and dark. Would have loved for it to be more light and cakey with a more distinct textural division from the caramelized fruit..
