1/2 cup packed light brown sugar Ask a question about this ingredient
1/2 cup white sugar Ask a question about this ingredient
1/3 cup white sugar Ask a question about this ingredient
1 cup buttermilk Ask a question about this ingredient
1/4 cup butter flavored shortening Ask a question about this ingredient
1/4 cup butter, room temprature Ask a question about this ingredient

Grease a 9 inch diameter bundt pan or a 9x9 square baking dish.
Ask a question about this stepPreheat the oven to 400 degrees and center a rack.
Ask a question about this stepIn a medium bowl combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and set aside.
Ask a question about this stepFinely chop 3/4 of one of the apples...set the other 1/4 aside.
Ask a question about this stepUsing a mandoline slicer, thinly slice one apple into slices and set aside.
Ask a question about this stepIn the bowl of a stand mixer, using the paddle attachment combine the butter sugar and shortening until fluffy, then add the vanilla and mix until incorporated.
Ask a question about this stepAdd the egg and mix, then the applesauce and mix, until incorporated.
Ask a question about this stepSlowly add the flour mixture and the buttermilk bit by bit alternating each, until all ingredients are mixed in, stop and scrape the bottom & sides of the bowl at least once. Then add the chopped fresh apple by handfuls, while the mixer is on a low speed until fully incorporated.
Ask a question about this stepUse the thin sliced apple to line the bottom of the pan you are using, then pour the batter on top of the thin apple slices.
Ask a question about this stepBake at 400 for about 40-45 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.
Ask a question about this stepLet stand about 10 minutes, then invert/flip the cake out onto a cake plate to cool completely.
