A good drink becomes a great cocktail when consumed in the proper setting. This is why the same gin martini will taste better in a Manhattan hotel bar than it does in the bleachers of Yankee Stadium. It’s why a strawberry margarita sounds fun at your cousin’s wedding but strange at a pub on St. Patrick’s Day. With that in mind, we decided to look back at our 52 most popular cocktail recipes of all time, rank them by popularity, and identify an ideal moment for each one.

Surely a Boulevardier should be included in this list? Although the Boulevardier is generally viewed as a Negroni made with whiskey rather than gin, that also implies equal proportions. My version is a little stronger and a little more bitter: 1.5 oz. Rittenhouse Rye, 1 oz Campari, .75 oz Cocchi Vermouth. YUM!
