Travel Food Photo Contest

by:
May 28, 2010

Do you love to photograph all the delicious food you come across during your travels? Starting today, Tablet Hotels and food52 are co-sponsoring a contest for the best travel food photograph -- if your photo is chosen as the winner, you'll get a 2-night stay at the Healdsburg Modern Cottages in the Napa Valley area (technically Sonoma County), with drinks and appetizers for 2 at Barn Diva (an $800 value) and $400 of products from OXO for your kitchen!

Your photograph can be of something you ate or drank while traveling, a beautiful pile of colorful chiles or fresh fish you stumbled upon at a market, a gorgeous cake you saw in a shop window -- even someone making cheese or hand-pulled noodles. Get creative!

Shop the Story

To enter, simply email your photo to [email protected]. Submissions will be accepted until 8 p.m. EST on Friday, May 28th. A select group of finalists will be posted on Wednesday, June 2nd, and then the public will vote on who they think should take home the prize. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, June 9th.

Tablet and Food52 Travel Food Photo Contest Rules

Term: Starts Wednesday May 19, 2010 and ends 8pm EST on Friday May 28. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that they are 18 years old or older.

Who may enter:?Individuals 18 years old or older—except for individuals affiliated with Tablet and Food52 —are eligible. Tablet and Food52 will determine winners’ eligibility in their sole discretion.

What to enter:?Photographs must have been shot by the entrant within the past five (5) years (since May 19, 2005).

Cropped photos are eligible in all categories. We do not accept digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents, are acceptable. If our judges see that a photographer has obviously altered his or her photo, they reserve the right to disqualify it.

Photographs that have won any other contests or have been published in magazines and newspapers (except online) are not eligible. We define winning as having won a grand prize or  1st, 2nd, or 3rd place overall. Photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s rights, including copyright, are not eligible.

How to enter:?Please submit photographs via email to [email protected] or [email protected].  We do not accept photographs submitted through the mail. We do not accept more than one contestant per e-mail address.

High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible. Photographs must be in a .jpeg, .jpg or .gif format. Files submitted may not be larger than 2,048k (2Mb).

Tablet Inc. and Food52 reserve the right to disqualify contestants who are unable to submit, upon request, a high-resolution photograph of at least 300 dpi at 8 x 10 inches or an original photo negative, print or slide.

By entering the contest, entrants grant Tablet Inc. and Food52 a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional, publicity, exhibition, archival, scholarly, and all other standard purposes.  Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible.  Tablet Inc. and Food 52 will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.

Judging:?Judging will be conducted by the editors of Tablet Inc. and Food 52. Selected finalists will be published in the blogs of Tablet Inc. (www.TabletTalk.com) and Food52 (www.Food52.com) on Wednesday June 2 and users will be able to vote for those they like by leaving comments. The winner will be chosen by the editors and Tablet Inc. and Food 52. Decisions of the judges will be final.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. Tablet Inc. and Food52 reserve the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. Decisions of Tablet Inc. and Food52 will be final.

Grand Prize: 2 nights at the Healdsburg Modern Cottages (room charge and tax included) plus drinks and appetizers for two at Barn Diva plus $400 of kitchen equipment from OXO.

Winner must sign and submit a W9 and a license, and will be responsible for paying any taxes they may owe on a prize.

Are the photos up somewhere on the site? I don't see anything listed under contests...

Where can I find the finalists' photos?

Mardi M. May 28, 2010
Just submitted a few pics. Can't wait to see the roundup!

This is the part that worries me:

"By entering the contest, entrants grant Tablet Inc. and Food52 a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional, publicity, exhibition, archival, scholarly, and all other standard purposes. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. Tablet Inc. and Food 52 will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses."

Does this mean that our photos can be sold without any compensation to us? And does the "non-exclusive right" part mean that we are still free to sell our photos to another publisher, or not? What does the "as feasible" mean for the photographer credit? The "create derivative works" means that our photos can be altered without our permission?

I hate to be nit-picky, but I have sold some food and travel photos, and hope to continue to do so, so this is important to me in terms of what photo I might submit.

Sorting through 5 years of many trips - though I have only just started to learn about how to take decent food pics!!

Regarding Rules and How Many Photos Can Be Submitted:

I read the following throughout the rules though also saw another comment that any amount of photos could be submitted...which is it? Thanks, Jenn

"We do not accept more than one contestant per e-mail address."

JennT1981 May 19, 2010
Nevermind, I had to read the sentence a few times but I think I understand what they're saying now...not more than one person can use the same email to submit photos...thanks! Jenn

So this is a silly question, but how do you define travel? Somewhere outside of our current town? Or somewhere someone might like to travel? Is the idea to entice travel or to show where we've been? For instance, Tokyo is my current home. No photos of Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market?

la M. May 19, 2010
I wondered the same. I have a nice photograph from San Francisco, but I live in the Bay Area. I only submitted pictures to foreign destinations but maybe someone could clarify what "travel" is defined as for the purposes of the contest.

WinnieAb May 19, 2010
I am wondering exactly what qualifies as travel, too; ie how far away from home does the photo need to be taken?

TasteFood May 19, 2010
Your location is someone else's destination. I discover new places under my nose every day. Submit it.

Merrill S. May 19, 2010
If you consider it to be part of your life's "travels," it's probably okay.

Kitchen B. May 19, 2010
Is this only open to US residents?

Amanda H. May 19, 2010
The contest is open to anyone!

Kelsey B. May 19, 2010
Fun, fun. I love seeing all the great photos that come through, like when you did the Thanksgiving event.

$400 of OXO will certainly make me over look the licensing agreement! I'd give away all my photos for a good spatula! :-D

I *heart* OXO!

la M. May 19, 2010
I just have one question. Are we limited in the number of photographs we submit? I read the contest rules and didn't seem to find anything restricting the entry numbers for each participant (but perhaps I just missed it).

Amanda H. May 19, 2010
No restrictions on the number of photos -- just keep in mind our sanity as we have to pore over all of them! :)

Amber O. May 19, 2010
Please correct the error that Healdsburg is in the Napa Valley. It is in Sonoma County which is a distinctly different wine region (and not in Sonoma Valley either which is a different part of Sonoma county). It pains many of us when Napa Valley is considered the only wine valley in Northern California! Many regions, many great wine country experiences...Looking forward to this contest!

Kristen M. May 19, 2010
Noted! Thanks for pointing that out.

NakedBeet May 19, 2010
Going through Italy pictures right now! Great contest.

wanderash May 19, 2010
I love this!

Oui, C. May 19, 2010
What a great idea! Heading back to France this summer, and will be sure to be spending time in as many outdoor marchés as I can find. I'll try to scoop a few decent photos along the way. - S

Kristen M. May 19, 2010
This contest actually ends next Friday at 8pm ET -- sadly your next round of photos from France won't make the deadline, but if you have any cool travel food photos in your archives, we'd love to see them!

robinbeth May 19, 2010
How many photos can you enter?

Amanda H. May 19, 2010
We're a small team here, so if you can keep it reasonable, that would be great!

mrslarkin May 19, 2010
Fun! I'll see what I have!
