I love all of the comments and stories regarding unintentional kitchen fires! I'm not a firestarter, preferring to burn my hands again and again and again as I cook. We all have our tendencies toward certain types of kitchen accidents and that is mine. In Dorie Greenspan's latest book, she mentions catching her parents' kitchen on fire during her very early years of cooking. I'd love to hear that whole story!
The truth is I did not intentionally set the turkey on fire but boy, did it burn! Here's the story! When I made my first turkey for Thanksgiving, I did not clean it properly and left the wrapped package inside. After about an 1 and a 1/2 hours cooking I smelled something burning and opened the oven door to see the turkey flaming! I yelled for my husband, as he was taking the flaming turkey out of the oven he dropped it, our dog promptly grabbed it and ate it on top of my brand new comforter on our bed.
ChefLindaS1999 - I am so sorry this happened to you, but it sure makes for a very funny story years later!! I cannot stop laughing about the dog on the bed - ugh!
That must have been a site! It also reminds me of the squirrel story on This American Life. If you haven't heard it before, you might like it.
Given my propensity for clumsiness, I'd be lucky to lose only my eyebrows. So, not only will I not be contributing a recipe on this topic, I don't think I'll try any either. But, I can't wait to see the results!
I second this
You asked "Is it just us or is it hot in here?" and my reply is it's just you two hot gals heating up the kitchen again! ;-)
Love this contest theme - Cherries Jubilee was my favorite dessert as a child - I loved the drama of it AND the boozy cherries over good vanilla ice cream.
Oooh! I wasn't planning on cooking anything big this weekend, but now I kinda have to!
I'm with you, Heena. I have several flambéed favorites this challenge brought to mind.
Another excuse to raid the liquor cabinet LOL
& make an extended trip to the local liquor store... After all its for the noble cause of culinary research!!
I believe the term is "flambe" unless you are Rachael Ray and then it becomes Molotov Cocktail. Playing with matches is fun.
Incinerated eyebrows... Can't believe I'm actually looking fwd to the possibility!...*HIC*
I'm not sure I should be trusted with fire...
How fun! Mr L does love the blowtorch ... can the flame be outside on the grill? Not that I have anything specific in mind. OK going to check lighter and match supplies. Start burning! Safety second people!!! :-)
Will be sitting this one out, but watching with great interest . . . am eager to learn how to harness the pyrotechnics. (My usual method of cooking with fire goes like this: Start cooking. Respond to text from son and then check email on phone or listen to the voice messages from calls you ignored while driving home, or run into the other room to set the TV to record the Giants game and start watching PreGame Live, or go outside to pick some thyme and take care of something needs to attention in the backyard, all the while leaving whatever is cooking on "high." Return to kitchen when the smoke alarm goes off and/or big clouds of black smoke come billowing out of the kitchen and dining room windows.) ;o)
You'd think we routinely cook together, AntoniaJames!
This is me too! Glad to hear that I am not the only one who cooks like this. . . . :)
I used to have a potholder someone gave me with "Dinner will be ready when the smoke alarm goes off" on it, but unfortunately I burned a bunch of big black holes in it (the kind only flames will make), so it was useless after about a month. I'm not kidding. ;o)
My user name is not "Burned Offerings" for a reason.
My favorite flambe is my 1997 edition of Joy of Cooking. Wish I could figure out how to upload a picture, but didn't feel right about calling it a "recipe"... ;)
Cool theme...look out eyebrows and eyelashes!
Good golly. I just had a déjà vu of the Cherries Jubilee at my wedding reception, wheeled in on tables and all done very dramatically to the theme of Star Wars.
Iam so sorry I missed that! LOL
No kidding. I wish I had thought of that for my wedding!
That must have been something! PS. I love cheries jubilee.
Darn. There goes my accidentally incinerated Swedish apple cake out of the running... ;)
I assume you guys want our "Best Dish You Set on Fire ON PURPOSE!". I've had many of the other kind. This will be really fun!
